The Torfaen Tigers Wheelchair Rugby League team faced a challenging day on August 3rd, suffering heavy defeats in their double-header against Cardiff Blue Dragons and the Argonauts.

Despite showing determination and effort, the Tigers were outmatched by two strong teams, highlighting areas for improvement as they move forward.

Tigers vs. Cardiff

The day began with a tough fixture against Cardiff, who delivered a commanding performance to secure a 74-16 victory over the Tigers.

The Tigers entered the game with high hopes but found themselves on the back foot early on as Cardiff's relentless attack and tight defense set the tone.

Despite the difficult start, the Tigers managed to score some well-earned tries, with Poppy and Mila scoring their first tries for the team. However, Cardiff's experience and cohesion were evident as they capitalised on every opportunity, pulling away as the match progressed.

Reflecting on the game, team secretary Mathew acknowledged the strength of the opposition. "We had some good moments, but they were too few and far between. It's a tough result to take, but we’ll learn from it and work on our mistakes."

Tigers vs. Argonauts

In the second fixture of the day, the Tigers faced the home team, The Argonauts, hoping to bounce back from their earlier defeat.

Unfortunately, the Argonauts proved just as challenging, cruising to a 68-20 win. The Tigers showed glimpses of their potential, with Alys and Tomos both crossing the line for some well-deserved tries, their first as Tigers, but the Argonauts' play made it difficult for the Tigers to gain any real momentum.

The Argonauts took control, and while the Tigers fought valiantly, they were unable to close the gap. The Tigers' defense struggled to contain the Argonauts' well-coordinated attacks, and by the time the final whistle blew, the scoreline reflected the uphill battle the Tigers had faced.

After the match, Tigers captain Darran Dowey spoke about the team’s effort. "It’s been a tough day with two hard games, and the results show we have a lot to work on. But I’m proud of the effort the team has put in. We didn’t give up, and that’s important. We’ll take these lessons into our next games and keep pushing forward."

Looking Ahead

The double-header against Cardiff and the Argonauts was a stern test for the Tigers, and while the results were disappointing, the team remains committed to improving and learning from these experiences. The Tigers are determined to regroup, refine their strategies, and come back stronger in their upcoming fixtures.

The Tigers will look to bounce back in their next challenge, with a focus on building on the positives and addressing the areas that need improvement as they continue their campaign.

The Tigers face Hereford Harriers and Crusader Celts at Wrexham, on 24th July.
